Liturgy of the Hours
The church has created not only a calendar to mark days and seasons, but also a “clock” to tell the time of day. This official public prayer of the Church, known as the Liturgy of the Hours, is the daily cycle of prayers and readings that has portions designated for morning, midmorning, midday, mid afternoon, evening, and night. Although the Liturgy of the Hours, or the Divine Office as it is commonly called, is mandated for all priests and religious, Pope John Paul II warmly recommended it to lay people as well. Plan on giving God a few extra minutes on these designated Sundays of Advent and Lent and begin a “love affair of a lifetime.”
“The Liturgy of the Hours is intended to become
the prayer of the whole people of God.”
